I so agree! So intense and intricate. I read several articles about him, and it seems he had a really rough childhood, and spent most of his life in a psychiatric hospital. I wonder how much surroundings contribute to one’s creativity. Positive OR negative.
I had to read up on the artist as well. The work looked familiar, but I didn’t recognise the name. I think that environment influences every artist. Environments can make it possible to create art. Wölfli was probably introduced to art as a form of therapy. But artists often also rail against their environment through art, which is in my opinion one of the most important aspects of art. It does seems like Wölfli was a deeply troubled person, and I hope that his artistic work gave him some respite.
I so agree with everything you said. I’m always talking about the “high” you get off of your art, but I can remember writing some pretty deep, depressing, tragic poetry when I went through bad times years and years ago. I should have kept those diaries!
