A bit depressing, his work I mean. But I read he fought in a war. I think no one will ever be the same after fighting in a war or even just surviving in a war.
So very true. I think most painters who have a repertoire of haunting paintings are somewhat haunted by something themselves. Disturbing but beautiful.
The weird thing is that, unlike other dark artists, I didn’t read about any psychological reason for his dark artwork. The last part of his career he was into colors and portraits and lighter things. But it was these dark drawings that called me. I wonder what that means….
I don’t know much about the artist, but I just read that he was responding to a war he fought in, so I guess he was traumatised. The symbolism he used gives the works a surreal quality that is mesmerising.
That is enough to scar any person. The horrors one sees can never be known nor understood, and I can see that now in his work. His later works were more colorful and easier on the psyche. Thank you for sharing that info. Knowing me, I might have read right past that important point.

Profoundly weird, but I like the colour palettes in the colour images.
